The Flick

January 28th - February 14th, 2016

WRITTEN BY Annie Baker

DIRECTED BY Molly Rhode

“…precisely the kind of show that stirs up questions about what we need from our movies and plays — and from each other.”

– Laura Jones, Isthmus

The smell of popcorn fills the air

In a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35-millimeter film projectors in the state. Amidst the daily drudgery, they navigate the small triumphs and heartbreaking moments that are the substance of our daily lives. Issues of race, class, family, and sex underline this awkward, funny, and incredibly touching play. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and poignant cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world.

THE DYING OF THE LIGHT

SPECIAL OUTREACH EVENT

Saturday, February 27th @ 2:00pm
4070 Vilas Hall, Madison (821 University Ave)

A must for cinephiles, this moving and informative documentary celebrates the art of celluloid film projection. Through interviews with veteran projectionists and new footage that explores the booths of some of the nation’s still extant movie palaces and drive-ins, Dying of the Light tells the story of how movies are brought to life before an audience. The thorough research of director Flynn brings us up-to-date with the recent transition from film to digital for most commercial theaters and the efforts of a noble few (like Quentin Tarantino with The Hateful Eight) to keep analog exhibition alive. Peter Flynn will join us in-person for a post-film chat with Professor David Bordwell, author of Pandora’s Digital Box: Films, Files, and the Future of Movies, and UW Cinematheque Director of Programming Jim Healy. Presented in support of Forward Theater Company’s production of The Flick, in performance January 28-February 14 at the Overture Center.
